I had a ton to look forward to in 2007. 5 of my favorite 6 artists released an album this year. While i think most of them played it safe and/or released mellow albums (compared to their previous output), none of the stars fell from the sky. But a few low-hanging comets came crashing down bringing a tidal-wave of "huh?"-to-suck in their wake. Here are this year's top 10 disappointments.
| Pos. | Title | Artist | Explanation |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 | 23 | Blonde Redhead | Their last album, Misery Is a Butterfly, was at times a majestic stunner. This one, not so much. Very muddled in its delivery (probably cursed by that album title). |
| 09 | Living With The Living | Ted Leo & the Pharmacists | This is what happens when you let your message out voice song structure and melodicism. Fun in parts, but as a follow-up to Shake the Streets it's a bomb. (Repeat, bomb.) |
| 08 | Zeitgeist | Smashing Pumpkins | I wasn't expecting much, but i was still disappointed. Yes, Tarantula rocks. Yes, most of the album does a decent job of hooking with the guitar power. But there's no variety -- it's all rock all the time. And the songs, while decent, aren't that good. I'd rather have Machina II. And don't start me on their attempt to milk their fans with 3-or-4 "exclusive" CDs/mp3-albums at various outlets. |
| 07 | Tones of Town | Field Music | After their last 2 albums, i gave up. Boring indie pop at its least interesting. Then i read a ton of rave reviews saying this was far-and-above better than their other stuff. Tried it. While it's a slight improvement, overall i'm done with Field Music. |
| 06 | Country Mouse, City House | Josh Rouse | I think the album title gave this away. While he's still writing good pop songs, there seems to be no variance to his music anymore. Just simple pop songs. While catchy, they don't stand out anymore. |
| 05 | Weekend In The City | Bloc Party | Kinda sounds like their last album but just doesn't seem near as fun or cheeky or bringing anything i can sing along to. |
| 04 | Let's Just Be | joseph arthur & the lonely astronauts | Where did this come from? Someone wants to be the black crowes and blue mountain at once. What happened here?? This guy has too much talent to waste. |
| 03 | White Chalk | PJ Harvey | Possibly the biggest lull in her catalogue. Almost every song drones on without much tension or passion or conviction. Sounds like she phoned-in her vocals. Say it ain't so, PJ! |
| 02 | Under The Blacklight | Rilo Kiley | i never felt strongly about a rilo kiley album before, but that jenny lewis album really set my expectations high. Not sure what the obsession is with workers of the night, but this album is far from a sexy shot in the pelvis. |
| 01 | Volta | Bjork | Medulla was probably my favorite of her stuff since Post. i love how she approached that near- a capella album. Felt very organic & human. Volta just seems like a boring mess in comparison. She said it's her "world dance" album. Maybe, if she played a world dance 33" at 45" speed. There are a couple interesting tracks like "declare independence" and "innocence", but i'm going to be wary before buying another bjork album. |
Other candidates: art brut, super furry animals, frog eyes, john vanderslice and kanye west.
